Description

Some people come to behavioural science for academic theory. Others come because they want to change how things actually work in the real world. This role is for the second group.

At Common Thread, you’ll shape research and lead collaborative work on complex health and global development challenges- often in messy, high-stakes contexts where there’s no clear playbook. You’ll design the way teams think together, turning insight into practical behavioural solutions that respect people’s lived realities.

We’re looking for someone who brings momentum, curiosity, and care into the room- someone who can move between strategy and delivery, structure and creativity, seriousness and joy. If that sounds like how you like to work, we might have a role with your name on it.

In particular, this person will likely serve as technical lead on a forthcoming project in Chad, which is focused on developing a comprehensive national strategy for reducing child mortality and enhancing child rights and development.

Responsibilities

  • A large part of the day-to-day of this role will be working on client projects to apply your skills in behavioural science - this could be designing mixed methods research, conducting interviews and data analysis, writing strategies, or running co-creation workshops and building capacity via training. Every day is a little different at Common Thread, and generalists thrive here!
  • Bringing together diverse viewpoints and data sources to co-create creative, evidence-based and pragmatic solutions.
  • Your French language skills and facilitation chops will have you leading workshops, stakeholder convenings, and trainings in French with high level stakeholders, so confident facilitation skills in French is a must.
  • Working closely with the HCD, Design and our entire multidisciplinary team at Common Thread to define and implement Common Thread’s approach to Behavioural Science
  • Identifying and applying a rigorous application of behavioural science principles, tools and innovative approaches to project design, research and implementation
  • Conducting or coordinating remote and in-field research (qualitative and quantitative) around the world
  • Contributing to business development and Common Thread’s thought leadership in Behavioural Science

Requirements

Skills:

  • Extensive experience leading and implementing behavioural science/behaviour design research and interventions, with applied experience in the Global South required
  • International experience, especially in the Global South. Being based in Francophone Africa is strongly desired.
  • A Masters Degree in Psychology, Behavioural Science, Anthropology, or similar degree - or an equivalent mix of education, experience and training in the behavioural science field
  • Professional fluency in both French and English; Arabic and/or Spanish desirable
  • In-depth understanding of behavioural science principles and their application to public health and development
  • Experience convening and forming relationships with diverse stakeholders from government, civil society, and academia
  • Highly skilled and dynamic facilitator of workshops, user research and design research processes
  • An enthusiastic ambassador for the value, effectiveness and process of behavioural science, and transferring this excitement and skills to others
  • A high level of digital literacy and excellent communication skills. Able to use online collaboration and project management tools to effectively work with a remote team
  • Experience working in or for multilateral agencies and foundations. Experience with United Nations agencies or The Gates Foundation is desirable

Characteristics and Values:

  • Ability to work as a “Manager of One”; you are highly independent and can build goals and execute on them independently
  • You are mission driven and passionate about applying your skills and time towards improving the lives of others, particularly those who are most vulnerable
  • You have a growth mindset - you are curious, have a passion for learning, and see feedback as an opportunity to learn and grow
  • You align with and are energised by Common Thread’s Values

Additional Information

Not so fun fact: Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other marginalised folks tend to only apply when they check every box. Think you have what it takes, but don’t meet all the criteria? Please apply anyway.

Common Thread is an equal opportunity company, and we value diverse voices, backgrounds, and perspectives on our team. We don’t discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, or status as an individual with a disability.
